The Record Thread

I'm a bit new to record collecting, but my collection is slowly growing. I went to a different store than my usual one (which doesn't have any Megadeth records), looked around, and scanned the M section.

It was already off to a great start. I spotted Countdown to Exctintion and noticed Rust in Peace behind it. But as soon as I saw SFSGSW, I got excited. I also saw Youthanasia, but I wanted to start with some kind of order, so I grabbed PS instead. Either KIB is next or RIP. Can't wait to spin them!

Standard 180 gram press? Good thing is that these new represses completely preserves the original mixes as far as I know!

judging by the look on the record its a newer pressing (typically a remasters). ACDC have a similar record such as their 2003 remasters incuding the exact layout of the bands name.

typically look on ebay or FB marketplace if your into collecting the rarer records like 1st pressings. i recommend them first before the remaasters as remasters sound like the exact same as spotify where as first pressings show the feeling on how itr was originally released.. something spotify doesnt do.

I think I have the remasters. When I got to Darkest Hour, the intro sounded like the remaster, but I sensed that 502 sounded a bit different.

I was initially going to purchase the original pressing, but it would've taken longer for me to own them given their price. I'm not disappointed since it's a good starting point, but I eventually need to get an original pressing of SFSGSW and other original pressings of tracks I don't own yet.

You likely have a modern Capitol repress that uses the 2004 remastered audio mixes then.

It's still a good starting point like you say! Getting those original pressings in clean condition can be very expensive.

I’m entirely new to vinyl. I’ve only ever had CDs, so it’s fascinating how much pressings matter, and also remixes versus remastering. It’s critical stuff. Thanks for teaching me guys 😊

It can be a very rewarding hobby to get into, but it can also be an absolute (expensive) jungle of matrix numbers, catalog codes and barcodes when you're trying to figure out exactly what version you're holding!

Discogs is a really handy website for looking up specific pressings or trying to locate your own copy.

theres always something new to collect, miss press, reissue, 1st press, 2nd press, little details mean the biggest things. High voltage is worth like $50 but the Australian one is worth upwards of $300.

they all matter

Me too. Absolutely. Firstly, I’ll be engrossed in the cover and sleeve design and details. It’s gonna be awesome after only having CDs. And before that cassettes. But right now, I haven’t got one bit of hardware to play records.

Update on my Peace Sells record:

After listening to both sides, I was relieved to know that I didn't have the 2004 remaster. So I won't have to worry about getting my hands on an
older pressing. As mentioned in a different thread, I bought KIB, which was a nice re-release of the original instead of the 2002 mix. I just love how high the bass is!
